Tabogas: An Art Contest Idea for the Island
April 27, 2021
When I was in university, a professor took us to visit Taboga back in 1995, and the assignment was to study the island’s architecture and landscapes (it also worked as a kind of reward for academic effort).
My idea is to reach out to art professors at every university and put together a visit plan to the island with their students, so they can draw and paint the island’s beauty.
And give students an extra incentive with a “Tabogas” drawing and painting contest (paintings of the island’s landscapes), with a prize of travel, a weekend stay, dinner and a tour included (for a couple, for example).
It should also happen at the Benjamín Quintero school (the island’s school) — I don’t doubt something like it already does — but with the goal of building the children’s love for the island, teaching them that this land is theirs and that it needs to be cared for, since it has fed their families for many years.
And reward them too with a trip to the presidential palace, so they can see “Los Tamarindos,” a fresco painted inside the Palacio de las Garzas by Roberto Lewis, along with a tour of Casco Antiguo, museums, and so on.
Best regards.
