Sea Turtles in Taboga: A Community Rescue
September 23, 2022
On Sunday, September 18, 2022, an impressive sea turtle came ashore to lay her eggs on the island.
Thanks to a group of Taboga locals — among them several young men who rent beach umbrellas, along with Mr. Dimas Bustamante and Mr. Samid Botello — the eggs were safely moved to a new spot where they could hatch protected.
The group #tortugastaboga is a non-profit working to run a turtle-egg nursery, to make sure these beautiful animals reach the sea safely; the initiative has helped more than 1,000 baby turtles return to the ocean healthy over four years of work.
We want to thank every resident who helps protect this work with the turtles. You can follow their progress on Instagram: @tortugastaboga.
This conservation work is also part of what you can experience during a visit to the island — read more in our things to do in Taboga guide.
